What to Expect From Your Massage / Massage Do's and Don't's
Before your first massage, you will be asked to fill out an intake
form with questions about your health and any problems you may have.
This is done to help plan safe and effective massage sessions.
For massages performed on a table,
you will be asked to remove your clothing. The therapist will leave
the room to allow you to change and you will be covered (draped)
throughout the massage. If you are uncomfortable removing your
clothing, leave on items that you will be comfortable in throughout
the massage. Please note: tight fitting clothing will hinder
circulation and, therefore, reduce the benefits received from
massage.
-
DO – let your therapist know about your preferences for music,
pressure, positioning, etc. This is your massage and you should
feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the session.
-
DO – Relax and Breath. Massage is most effective when you are
completely relaxed. It is normal to sometimes tighten up or
contract muscles during the massage. Often taking a few deep
breaths helps to relax the body if you feel yourself tensing up.
Let your therapist know if they need to adjust their strokes to
help you relax.
-
DO – let your therapist know if you are uncomfortable.
-
DO – ask questions. You have a right to know what will be or is
being done and why.
-
DO – drink plenty of water after your massage.
-
DO NOT – eat right before a massage.
-
DO NOT – be late, rushed or hurried before, during or after your
massage. Take time to relax your mind and quiet your thoughts.
If your mind is racing during the massage, it often helps to
concentrate on your breathing, the music or the massage itself.
-
DO NOT – get off the table or up from the floor or chair too
quickly. You may feel light-headed or dizzy after a massage –
take your time to get your bearings.
